The INFORMAL PUBLIC project is an exploration of the informal activities that occur in, and often create public space. Project authors, Ed Wall and Sam Johnston, have chosen the Elephant & Castle area of South London to question public space design and its ability to incorporate INFORMAL PUBLIC. What is public space? What is a public act? How has INFORMAL PUBLIC space manifested itself in the existing Elephant and Castle development? And how have the current regeneration proposals approached the issue of an INFORMAL PUBLIC?

The project has been organised into three distinct phases:
1. Mapping Analysis: the visual and geographic representation of our analysis of INFORMAL PUBLIC
2. Public Installations: physical representation of the analysis within the public spaces of Elephant and Castle to facilitate public engagement, participation and theoretical framework development
3. Informal dissemination: production of a free paper and website that will include photo analysis, maps, theoretical texts and documentation of the INFORMAL PUBLIC project

The Elephant & Castle area has been recognised as an area of London that is in need of greater creative industries and specifically those that engage with local communities. The INFORMAL PUBLIC project will strengthen the creative community of Elephant & Castle through research, installations, and dissemination.

The INFORMAL PUBLIC project will create distinct opportunities to promote and celebrate diversity in the public spaces of Elephant & Castle. Through the project many activities and social groups will be
recognised for their contribution to public space ? groups that are often ignored, marginalised, and suppressed. This project will highlight that public space in particular should be promoting and celebrating greater diversity.
